What we do
BERTS isn’t about just reading theory or memorizing protocols—it’s about learning search and rescue (SAR) in a way that sticks. We take proven search strategies, real-world experience, and hands-on training to create a learning experience that prepares you for the field, whether as a volunteer or a professional.
What sets BERTS apart? Our team. You won’t just learn from a single instructor—you’ll train under two or more experts with advanced SAR training, including NASAR SARTECH I certification, Wilderness EMT credentials, and specialized medical knowledge. We bring real-world stories, hard-earned lessons, and tactical expertise straight into the classroom, ensuring you’re ready for whatever challenges the field throws your way.
At BERTS, we bridge the gap between theory and practice, equipping students with the skills needed to excel in search and rescue operations. Our approach combines in-depth research, industry best practices, and hands-on training to ensure you can effectively apply your knowledge in both volunteer and professional settings.
What makes BERTS unique is our instructional team. With multiple advanced-level SAR professionals—including NASAR SARTECH I-certified instructors, Wilderness EMTs, and experts in wilderness medicine—we bring a depth of experience that goes beyond the textbook. Quick
Frequently Asked
Questions
What am I paying for?
There is a simple answer that sets NASAR apart from any other curriculum you can find. You are paying for a standardized certification that meets ASTM, NFPA, FEMA, the National SAR Supplement, CSA, ANSI, ISO, many sate SAR guidelines, and other industry and internationally recognized standards.
Where do I start?
There are some great awareness level courses that can be taken online. These will help wet your appetite and help you understand if the particular topic(s) are what you want to pursue with your time and resources. NASAR has great courses in their ISAR (Introduction to Search & Rescue) course with online exams to gain entry level certificates for SARTECH IV & III. These are NOT designed to prepare you or certify you for field deployment for a SAR event. They are awareness only, to help you have a larger understanding and overview of what SAR is.
How do I start?
Your first step is to get trained as an individual SAR asset. This is the foundation to all other training and specialty work you will get into. Get certified, follow recognized standards, Prioritize Safety & Compliance. (see full F.A.Q page for more information)
